When a beloved TV show ends, it elicits a flurry of emotions: sadness because the story is over, excitement for the final chapter, and occasionally, disappointment over how the writers decided to handle the finale. That was certainly the case with Dexter , a popular crime drama series that aired in the mid-aughts and shocked viewers with its fascinating yet grotesque premise.

Sometimes Dexter was Norman Bates. Sometimes he was John-Boy Walton. You might as soon have expected Hannibal Lecter to open a funeral home for the indigent, or the Talented Mr. Ripley to sculpt balloons into animals for nursing-home patients. So what happened to Michael C. He grew a thin red beard and, from what I could tell, became the very depressed employee of a logging company. Dexter, moving quickly as a hurricane moved in on the city, removed poor Deb from life support and, noticed by no one, carried her corpse into his boat, the Slice of Life.
He sped out into open waters while black clouds roiled the sky and he dumped the body, which floated down beneath the waves with suitable mournful poetry. Meanwhile, Hannah boarded a plane with Harrison. It was then that we saw Dexter again: Accepting a life of unhappiness, regret and guilt as his destiny, he had opted for the solitary lumberjack lifestyle. He was, perhaps, still pursuing serial killers and murdering them on the side.
Or perhaps cutting down trees had become its own form of therapy. It was all horribly heavy handed, an attempt to inject deep feeling into a show that thrived on playful shallowness. I can see how difficult it would be to end the show in a way that was satisfying or even logical.

Hall almost since the start of the show, even though it took her until Sunday’s season six finale to truly realize it. Carpenter and Hall must have seen the possibilities; they were briefly married during the show’s run.

Debra Charlotte Morgan spelled Deborah in the novels is a fictional character created by Jeff Lindsay for his Dexter book series. She also appears in the television series , based on Lindsay’s books, portrayed by Jennifer Carpenter. A tough, foul-mouthed tomboy, she craved her father’s attention and envied Dexter for the amount of time Harry spent with him, unaware that Harry was training him to be a vigilante serial killer.
While a teen she lost her mother to cancer. From then on, she decided to become a detective, like her father.
Or what about homicide cops Debra Morgan and Quinn? with no better example than Dexter’s awkward and expletive-spitting sister Deb.
As the Showtime series comes to what looks like a disastrous end, let’s take a look back at some of the show’s bigger missteps. Sure, Dexter had some bright spots in its eight seasons, but there have been many mistakes that got us to the very low point that is the show’s final season. In Season 2, Deb became romantically involved with the much older Frank Lundy. It wasn’t the age difference that was the problem — it was that Debra was forced into another “inappropriate” romance, so soon after her relationship with the Ice Truck Killer.
The fact that she acknowledged her bad choices in men didn’t make this any better, and the pattern has continued throughout the series. Another pattern the series has had a hard time avoiding: an outside character finding out that Dexter is a serial killer and going along with it. This was mere episodes after Lila learned Dexter’s secret at the end of Season 2. Miguel wasted no time in joining forces with the Bay Harbor Butcher, despite the fact that he ostensibly had a conscience and knew that killing people — however evil they might be — is wrong.
What do you do when you’ve been single for five minutes? If you’re Deb, you latch onto the next ill-advised romantic partner. In this case, it was Anton Briggs, who should’ve been keeping a low profile as Quinn’s CI, but of course, he found himself drawn to the complicated Debra Morgan. Their relationship was fine — arguably the healthiest Deb has had — but it was another repetition of the trope that has dogged Deb from the get-go. Because why not!
